My father used to have a market stand on Saturdays in the middle of Amesbury village. And there he would sell his produce to the locals

This worked quite well, but by the end of the fifties, it was becoming less viable so my father changed his business quite radically.
I suppose he modernised!

He concentrated on growing chrysanthemums and tomatoes.
His produce was auctioned by a wholesaler in Southampton and, if I was at home from school, I would help pack up the flowers and tomatoes in the afternoon and, in the evening, load the trailer ready for the following morning when the alarm went off at 4.30.

It was magic to drive through the new forest as the sun burned through the mists of the night. One could see the wild ponies walking around under the branches of the old, oak trees.

In Southampton, we unloaded the trailer and left the flowers and tomatoes in the hands of the wholesaler, whose customers were mainly from the cruise ships and ocean liners moored in the docks.

And then we drove home, where my mother had prepared a most welcome ENGLISH BREAKFAST:
Bacon and eggs, toast, orange marmalade and tea!

Mein Vater hatte an Samstagen, in der Mitte des Dorfes Amesbury, einen Marktstand mit Obst, Gemüse und Blumen.
Dort verkaufte er seine Erzeugnisse an die Einheimischen.

Dies funktionierte recht gut, doch gegen Ende der 50er Jahre hin wurde sein Geschäft weniger existenzfähig, so dass mein Vater es ziemlich radikal veränderte.
Ich nehme an man sagt, er «modernisierte» !

Er konzentrierte sich auf den Anbau von Chrysanthemen und Tomaten.
Seine Ware wurde von einem Großhandelsabnehmer in Southampton versteigert, und ich half ihm, wenn ich nicht gerade im Internat war, die Blumen und Tomaten am Nachmittag einzupacken und am Abend den Anhänger zu beladen – fertig für den nächsten Morgen, wenn um vier Uhr dreißig der Wecker klingelte.

Es war magisch durch den New Forest zu fahren, während sich die Sonne sich durch die Nebel der Nacht brannte.
Man konnte die wilden Ponies unter den Ästen der alten Eichen herumlaufen sehen.

In Southampton entluden wir den Anhänger und ließen die Blumen und Tomaten in den Händen des Großhändlers, dessen Kunden hauptsächlich die Kreuzfahrtsschiffe und Ozeandampfer waren, die im Hafen angelegt hatten.

Und dann fuhren wir nach Hause, wo meine Mutter ein hőchst willkommenes englisches Frühstück vorbereitet hatte: Eier mit Speck, Toast, Orangenmarmelade und Tee.
