People And Places

People and Places
I set off in the morning sun
In May with the sense of summer to come
And now as I smell the autumn air
The people will ask – did I get anywhere?
No great feats worthy of mention
Several hours in police detention
I can’t remember all the songs I’ve sung
I can remember that it was fun
I love new places and people I meet
I love to sing for you on the street
To give what I’ve got and take what I need
In the winter’s cold and the summer’s heat
Someone asked what message I’d got
They were right to ask, it was quite a shock
To think that they thought I was just having fun
A student on holiday, a man on the run
They asked again - and what of my wife
And how could she share such a vagabond life
And what of insurance and illness and health?
They even asked what I’d put on the shelf
I really love to be outside
With the whole wide world before my eyes
I’m not such a friend of the wind and the rain
But you can’t have the peace without the storm
When birds are singing in the trees
The breeze is playing with the leaves
You don’t have to own it or say it is yours
The main thing is you’re out of doors
Someone said – you should be a star
And they wondered why I hadn’t got that far
The funny thing is, if you hear it enough
You begin to believe in this flattering stuff
I‘m not a musician, not really a poet
If you read these lines you will surely know it
I give what I’ve got, take what I can
And happy to be a vagabond man

Nicht Gleich

|

Just An Old Man

Just An Old Man
You’re just an old man singing your songs
Down on the street where you began
Don’t care for the cold, it’s warm in their hearts
You’re one in a million, that’s why they laugh!
Hey, hey, old man, where are you from
With your voice and accordion?
What do you want here?
The street is for those with no fear
You’re just an old man, the small voice of calm
But nobody hears, no one has time
But soon it is winter and warm in their hearts
You’re one in a million, come let them laugh!
You’re just an old man, I saw you in the mirror
Down on the street, what do we want here?
Thank God it is winter and warm in their hearts
You’re one in a million, now let them laugh!

Assez Comique

Assez Comique
Moi, je ne suis pas venue
Pour vous présenter mes excuses
Mais carrément pour vous chanter
Mes chansons
Je prenais toujours man violon
Ce changement me rend toute heureuse

Last Summer

Last Summer
Last summer was fine in September
Mist in the morning and I remember
The water was calm on my boat on the river
Last summer was fine in a back-water
drinking wine and dipping in the water
As time slipped slowly by
And the rain-drops fell gently down
Denting the water with a myriad crowns
Last summer was fine into October
No frost on the ground, no ice on the water
And the leaves were still green
And the rain-drops fell gently down
Denting the water with a myriad crowns

Vertraut, alles so bekannt
Doch etwas, mein Textbuch, blieb diesmal zurück
An was man plötzlich denken muss
Bringen euch neue Songs, unsere Lieder

Tinker Tailor
As I was a-walking one bright summer’s day
„Hey-hey“ said the beggar, „get out of my way
Don’t give a damn for your children, your wife or your bed
It’s my street today and I’d like to be fed“
„From Strasbourg to London I’ve lived with your type
You get a licence to sing, you think you’re alright
You’re gentle, you’re cultured, too selfish to work
You take my trade away, the oldest trade on earth“
You’re a tinker, tailor
Soldier, sailor
Rich man, poor man
Beggarman, thief
Policemen came, took us all away
Cosy old ladies sipping lemon tea
„I don’t like your songs, I don’t like your voice
I don’t like like your ways, I don’t like your face
I haven’t got nothing but bring me some wine
I haven’t got nothing but plenty of time“
He smelled of the road, he smelled of his rags
He smelled of his beer, his piss and his fags
I could turn my face and sing to the wall
Many‘s the time it wouldn‘t matter at all

All A Long Day
04:03
|
|||
All a long day
The sun was almost rising across the bay
Time to greet another brand-new day
The light was brighter than my head
The world was turning round
And in my hands only salty sand
We pulled ourselves together, found some food to eat
Swilled it down with bottles of warm beer
Cleaned ourselves as best we could
And washed our swollen feet
It didn’t take long to pack up all our gear
We set off in our sluggish way
Past cafés full of rich
And trudged along the road
Which lead to Nice
The sun was standing higher
And when we found our pitch
No one was there except for the police
And as the sun sank lower
Our spirit were the same
The music sounded thin, it wasn’t strange
Some beggars and some singers
Were jailed and who’s to blame?
It’s the same the whole world over
Nothing’s changed
Summers on the street
As a musician watching passers-by
And thinking that you’re king
And gaining credit from the passers-by
Disdaining all the beggars
Who have waited till the sun was high
From morning dew to evening queue
When people have long ceased to buy
It’s all a long day
The poor are always with you
Said a wise man long ago
A thousand years, ten thousand faces
Surely come and go
Some are lost and some are ill
And some do not know why
And there but for the grace of god
Go I

No Crime

|

No crime
You set each other free
And now there is a space to live
For you, for her , for me
Everyone has more to give
You set each other free
I’m so very proud of you
Against all the conventions and the fears
You followed that which for you was true
I think it is worth the silent tears
It was a brave decision, that’s clear to me
To me and never mind anyone else
A family we’ll always be
There are new chances for our inner health
Maybe some moments will be sad
A new life not easy after all that time
But I wish that you don’t forget
A change of direction is no crime

Doctor Music
Went to the doctor as I was ill
He didn’t know what to do
I asked my friends, I asked a healer
She said, „there’s nothing much wrong with you
You know the answer all by yourself
You know the way to your own health
All I can do for you is open up a door
You’ll have to get working if you want more“
I smiled my smile, I thanked her well
Went on my way with a singing in my soul
I had the chance to look at myself and
Understand the worries that had made me feel ill
What can I change then, what is missing
What is healing and what does me harm?
Went to the doctors – doctor music
Doctor dancing and doctor song
Follow the path along the trail
Checking all the turnings, lifting up the veil
Asking lots of questions, weighing up the past
The only real danger is in going too fast
The time is right, the time has come
To trust your feelings and walk with the sun
Believe your doctors – doctor music
Doctor dancing and doctor song

Träne

Träne
Wir stehen an einer Schwelle
Immer wieder zieht es uns her
