In the Spring of ‘78, my new friend, John, suddenly announced at a party at the Riverside Studios, “Chris and I are going busking in Paris for the Summer!”
Well, this was news to me but I somehow liked the idea. I would sing, John could collect the money and I guessed we’d have quite a lot of fun!
Someone we knew was selling an elderly, left hand drive Deux Chevaux, which seemed to be the best car to take to France, and at the end of June we were on the ferry to Calais with little more than the clothes we stood in and ten pounds to our names. In my pocket, I had a telephone number from a man for whom I had recorded a couple of my songs as a present for his mother. He had mentioned that
he might have a place to stay, should I ever come to Paris....
Well, he did have a place. A place just off the Champs Elysée. A nice, attic room with a view of the Eiffel tower.
Weren’t things going well? The deal for the room was quite simple. I should appear every now and then when Paul’s mother came to visit and sing a few of my sad ballads, and this was fine. Just, the Siamese cat staring from its perch in the corner of the room was a little bit unnerving. And John, fell in love with Paul’s girl-friend but luckily she never knew anything about it.
And I fell in love with Paris and with life in general. We managed to save a few Francs from our time in Paris and, after Bastille night, we followed the general exodus south.
Bouncing along in the open-top car on the minor roads, we stopped to enjoy the food, and the drink, and took life easy. After all, we were heading for St. Tropez, where the streets were paved with gold!
Dear Music-Friends,
We are happy to tell you, that we are out there again, on the streets of South of
France !
Hopefully rather sooner than later we will also add some new recordings on our site here.
Greetings and till then,
